The Seattle Supersonics Zip Towards a Second NBA Championship

We live in a super world. There is the super-size meal, the Super Duper Looper roller coaster, Superman, Superwoman, and even Superdog. Meanwhile, the NBA has the Seattle Supersonics. For over three decades, the Supersonics has represented Seattle. While the team’s most super season was 1978-1979, the Supersonics are always striving to win yet another NBA Finals.

The 1967-1968 season was the Seattle Supersonics’ first campaign in the NBA. They would be one of the NBA’s pair of new expansion teams. The name “Supersonics” referred to Seattle’s aerospace industry, and particularly to the Supersonic Transport (SST). A supersonic aircraft can travel quicker than the speed of sound. The first season of the Sonics was rough, as they finished with a 23-59 record.

A decade after entering the NBA, the Sonics had a new head coach (Bob Hopkins) and several new players for the 1977-1978 season. They finished the regular season with an admirable 47-35 record. In the playoffs, the Sonics edged the Los Angeles Lakers (2-1), upset the defending champion Portland Trailblazers (4-2), and soundly defeated the Denver Nuggets (4-2). Then during the Finals, the Sonics took a 3-2 series lead against the Washington Bullets, but would ultimately lose the series (4-3).

During the next season, the Seattle Supersonics was a team on a mission. They completed the regular season with a 52-30 record and won the division crown. Seattle would defeat the Los Angles Lakers (4-2), and then overcome a 3-2 deficit to nip the Phoenix Suns (4-3). The NBA Finals showcased a rematch between the Supersonics and the Bullets. However, this time the Sonics were faster (and better) than the Bullets, and avenged their defeat one year earlier (4-3).

The Seattle Sonics would return to the NBA Finals, during the 1995-1996 season. Their 64-18 regular season record was the best in the West. In the playoffs, the Sonics would dethrone the Sacramento Kings (3-1), shoot down the Houston Rockets (4-0), and then silence the Utah Jazz in a squeaker (4-3). The Supersonics was a solid team, but Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls overpowered them in the NBA Finals (4-2).

Throughout their tenure in Seattle, the Supersonics has retired six players’ jersey numbers:

•Fred “Downtown Freddie” Brown – #32 (Guard): 1971/1972-1983/1984
Famous for his accurate outside shots and played in the 1976 All-Star Game

•Spencer Haywood – #24 (Forward): 1970-1975
Four All-Star games and two All-NBA First Teams

•Nate McMillan – #10 (Guard): 1986,1987-1997,1998
Played 12 years with the Sonics, and served as its head coach for five years

•Jack Sikma – #43 (Center): 1977/1978-1985/1986
Seven NBA All-Star games (1979-1985)

•Lenny Wilkens – #19 (Guard): 1968/1969-1971/1972
Also served as head coach (1978-1985) and general manager (1985-1986) of the Supersonics.

•Gus Williams – #1 (Guard): 1977-1980, 1981-1984
Two NBA All-Star teams and one All-NBA First Team (1982)

The Sonics play to win their next NBA Finals. Use Seattle Supersonics merchandise to cheer on the team as it flies at super speeds towards its next NBA Championship!

The Portland Trailblazers Travel on the Path to Another NBA Championship

While standing on top of the world is an amazing feat, getting back there can be challenging. For instance, since the Portland Trailblazers won the 1977 NBA Finals, they have not succeeded at winning their second basketball championship. Since 1977, the Trailblazers have returned to the playoffs 25 times, have played in five Conference Finals, and have advanced to two NBA Finals.

When did the Trailblazers begin their journey to the NBA Finals? They were one of three expansion teams that the NBA added during the 1970-1971 season. The franchise chose the name in a “name the team” contest, in which people submitted about 10,000 entries. “Trailblazers” pays tribute to the explorers who traveled across the Oregon Trail during the 1800s. Here are some interesting facts about the state of Oregon:

• Oregon’s official state colors are blue and gold
• Oregon (and New Jersey) are the only two U.S. states with no “self-serve” gas stations
• Oregon is the only U.S. state with an official state nut (hazelnut)
• Oregon has the United States’ deepest lake (Crater Lake)
• Oregon’s state birthday is also Valentine’s Day (February 14).

During their premiere season in the NBA, the Trailblazers earned a 29-53 record.

By the 1976-1977 season, the Trailblazers had added key ingredients to its team, including Center Bill Walton. They had hot and cold streaks during the regular season, ending with a 49-33 record. In the playoffs, Portland would trample the Chicago Bulls (3-0), crack the Denver Nuggets (4-2), and then drown the Los Angeles Lakers (4-0). The Trailblazers faced the potent Philadelphia 76ers and “Dr. J.” in the NBA Finals. After falling behind in the series (0-2), the Trailblazers won four straight games and the series. (4-2)

The Trailblazers’ first chance to win a second NBA title, took place in 1990. Clyde Drexler led Portland to a solid 59-23 regular season record. They blanked the Dallas Mavericks (3-0), edged the San Antonio Spurs (4-3), and then outlasted the Phoenix Suns (4-3). However, the Trailblazers lost the NBA Finals to the Detroit Pistons, the defending champions (4-1).

Just two years later, the Trailblazers had another shot at an NBA title. This time, they earned another solid regular season record: 57-25. In the playoffs, the Trailblazers dominated the Los Angeles Lakers (3-1), trampled the Phoenix Suns (4-1), and eliminated the Utah Jazz (4-2). However, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls would overpower the Trailblazers in the finals (4-2).

Throughout their history, the Portland Trailblazers have retired the jersey numbers of seven players:

Clyde Drexler – #22 (Guard): 1983-1995
Maurice Lucas – #20 (Forward): 1976-1980, 1987-1988
Lloyd Neal – #36 (Forward): 1972-1979
Geoff Petrie – #45 (Forward): 1970-1976
Larry Steele – #15 (Guard): 1971-1980
Dave Twardzik – #13 (Guard): 1976-1980
Bill Walton – #32 (Center): 1974-1979

Repeating a success can be as difficult as achieving it the first time. For instance, the Portland Trailblazers are striving to earn their second NBA Finals victory. Use Portland Trailblazers merchandise to support them along the road to another NBA Championship!

The Utah Jazz Play to Hear the Sweet Sound of an NBA Championship

Have you ever wondered why the Utah Jazz is named as such? New Orleans, Louisiana was the birthplace of jazz, right? In fact, the NBA squad, the Utah Jazz, was originally the New Orleans Jazz. The Jazz played in New Orleans from 1975-1979. When the team moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, it retained the original team name.

Here are some interesting facts about Utah:

• Utah’s name originates from the Ute Native Americans
• Utah’s nickname is the “Beehive State”
• The state bird is ironically the California Sea Gull
• The Utah state flag contains a beehive, which symbolizes diligence
• Major industries include farming, mining, natural gas, oil, and steel production

The Utah Jazz’s premiere season in the NBA included some sour notes. They lost their first game to the Portland Trailblazers, and ended the season with 24-58 record. Although the Jazz’s first season was disappointing, they were beginning to create a solid foundation on which to build the franchise.

Less than two decades after entering the NBA, the Jazz’s team was playing sweet music. In particular, the duo of John Stockton and Karl Malone created one of the best one-two punches in the league. In 1996-1997, the Jazz earned a franchise-best 64-18 during the regular season.

The Jazz would glide through the playoffs. They sank the Los Angeles Clippers (3-0), drowned the Los Angeles Lakers (4-1), and eliminated the Houston Rockets in a war (4-2). In the NBA Finals, the Jazz faced Michael Jordan and the mighty Chicago Bulls. Though the Jazz played the Bulls closely, the Bulls overpowered them and won the series (4-2).

Having established a solid team, the Jazz would play all the right notes during the next regular season, finishing with an outstanding 62-20 record. In the playoffs, the Jazz would battle back to shoot down the Houston Rockets (3-2), unseat the San Antonio Spurs (4-1), and then drain the Los Angeles Lakers (4-0).

Many NBA experts chose the Utah Jazz to end the Bulls’ five-championship dynasty. However, the Jazz fell behind in the series 3-1, and never recovered. In Game 6, Michael Jordan willed the Bulls to victory and a 4-2 series win.

How have the Jazz fared since their last trip to the NBA Finals? While they have made seven playoff appearances and won three division crowns, the farthest they have advanced was to the Western Conference Finals (2007).

Throughout their history, the Jazz have retired the jersey numbers of seven players:

Adrian Dantley – #4 (Forward): 1979-1984
Mark Eaton – #53 (Center): 1982-1993
Darrell Griffith – #35 (Guard): 1980-1991
Jeff Hornacek – #14 (Guard): 1993-2000
Karl Malone – #32 (Forward): 1985-2003
Pete Maravich – #7 (Guard): 1974-1980
John Stockton – #12 (Guard) 1984-2003

It is inevitable that some of these players will also enter the basketball Hall of Fame.

While the Utah Jazz has earned two trips to the NBA Finals, it has not completed its song. Use Utah Jazz merchandise to cheer on the team to the sweet sound of an NBA Championship!

Tips on Sports Memorabiia

Sports Memorabilia collections can be around a sport such as basketball or a person such as Don Collins. Should the collection be for passion or money? That’s up to you but if you start with passion and then learn to choose wisely, you can have both. A little bit of history is what everyone wants when they collect sports memorabilia.

When starting out in collecting Sports Memorabilia, it is good to start with your favourite sport. It would be wonderful to collect declared national treasure and FIFA ambassador, Pele. However, we have to start
One area, is autographed sports memorabilia.

The success of the individual will change the value of the item. As well, the ability to prove an item is “game worn” and can be related to a particular famous game will increase the value. Retirement or death can add value to items for popular sportsmen. However, the need to prove authenticity or the devaluation that occurs when the autograph has a personal address such as the recipient’s name, make this market fraught with difficulty.

The difficulty in dealing with the large number of fraudulent signatures for sales has led to the need to have a certificate of authenticity and to buy from a reputable dealer.

Value of sports memorabilia is always hard to establish. Mark McGuire’s ball may have sold for one million dollars at Sotheby’s setting records for sports memorabilia but this won’t happen often. Other popular people for sports memorabilia collecting are Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Ted Williams, George Best, John Elway, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Edison Arantes do Nascimento. But there are many sports people whose memorabilia can be collected.

Did sports memorabilia start when Babe Ruth started collecting memorabilia. Or did sports memorabilia collecting start even earlier. Surely, a celtic football in the dark ages that was one of the first sports memorabilia.

Olympic memorabilia have long been collected since the early years of last century.

Jersey collecting in the 80s became the sports memorabilia turning point. Whether it is basketball, football or hockey, sports collectors were beginning to grow. There are trading cards, equipment, photographs.

Find the value of an item is hard. Searching for valuations for sports memorabilia can be difficult. Until a item is exchanged at auction with interested buyers, the value of any item of sports memorabilia is in the owner’s mind only.

But buying something for a sport you love is a good start.
